To be a Jew is to be part of a moving story in the annals of mankind. In the ancient world, mighty empires like Egypt sought to defeat mortality by building monumental temples and pyramids of stone, yet those empires ultimately crumbled into the dust of history.

Our ancestors, a nation of slaves who became a kingdom of priests, discovered a radically different secret to eternity. They realized that a people achieves immortality not by building physical monuments, but by engraving their values on the hearts of their children, generation after generation. They built citadels of liberty in their houses of study, turning education into the supreme religious experience.

They were a tiny people, yet they transformed the moral imagination of the Western world, introducing the revolutionary ideas of the sanctity of human life, the dignity of the individual, and the overarching sovereignty of justice. They taught the world that man and God are "partners in the work of creation," called to build a society of compassion, freedom, and equal access to hope.

This brings us to the very heart of our identity. The great founder of the Hassidic movement, the Baal Shem Tov, taught that the Jewish people itself is a living Sefer Torah, and every single Jew is one of its letters. To be a Jew means we are not free-floating atoms in infinite space; we are characters in an unfolding drama, a long line of people who traveled toward a destination whose journey remains unfinished.

A single letter on its own may seem to have no meaning, but when joined with others, it makes a word, words make a sentence, and sentences combine to make a story. Just as a physical Torah scroll is rendered invalid if even one letter is flawed or missing, the living scroll of the Jewish people is incomplete without your voice.

In an age where the Jewish identity is sometimes challenged by outside shadows, we believe the greatest defense against anti-Semitism is an unshakeable, joyous pride in who we are. Our identity must never be defined by the hatred of others, nor should we ever view our heritage as a burden.

Ours is a people of faith, not merely a community of fate. We must hold fast to the profound words sung by a Hassidic rabbi to his newborn child after he had survived the darkest horrors of the Warsaw ghetto and Treblinka:

Pride is not arrogance; pride is simply knowing who you are, cherishing your unique heritage, and finding peace with yourself and the world.
